By Our Reporter No one, until this Dashain, has thought that the Nepal Electricity Authority will be capable to end load-shedding. But once KulmanGhising was appointed to man the inefficient NEA, he has made this almost impossible task possible. Although the government has not yet announced the end of the load-shedding, the people in Kathmandu have virtually overcome the problem of load-shedding. The NEA under Ghiisng’s leadership has stop cutting power since Tihar festival. Ghising managed to do this all through internal management and import of electricity from India. He has controlled leakage of power and the practice of unfair distribution. Some powerful NEA employees were found supplying fuel illegally to a few industries. But Kulman ended this disparity. If all goes as planned, load-shedding is likely to be over for ever in near future. Ghising surely deserves kudos for this work. Energy Minister Janardan Sharma will also be appreciated for appointing the right man to lead the NEA that has been mired in corruption and ill management for the past several years. Only Minister Sharma recognised his talents and appointed him the CEO. However, the corrupt employees have been trying their best to oust Ghising from his present responsibility as ending of load-shedding has affected their business interests. The source of commission they used to get by illegally supplying fuel has dried up. Business of inverter, solar panel and generator has dropped as many of the NEA employees are involved in the business of electricity gadgets. Again there are other employees who work for the businessmen from receiving money.  Trade Union of NEA a few weeks back had issued a warning of not letting Ghising enter the office. His crime was to make efforts to end load-shedding. Now these union leaders have been meeting Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal demanding that Ghising should be dismissed. Obviously, the union leaders who have been working for the businessmen frequent PM Dahal with such demand.  The activities of the trade unions in NEA show that the practice of opening unions in government and semi-government offices should be banned immediately. NEA planning to install smart meter to control power leakage Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is preparing to install smart meters in the Kathmandu valley as its pilot project in its bid to control the power leakage due to technical errors, and for the convenience of customers. Presently the NEA is focused on controlling the electricity theft across the country, said NEA Executive Director Kul Man Ghising. Electricity theft through hooking is one of the major causes of loss facing it and the installation of smart meters is one of the attempts to control technical power leakage, said the NEA Executive Director. The NEA data shows that of 890 megawatt of electricity available in the NEA central grid, around 100 megawatts is wasted due to theft and leakage. With the installation of the smart meter, customers can pay the electricity bills through mobile phone. Such facility will be available for industrial corridors and corporate houses too.
