By Our Reporter prachanda-cabinet-11111Although the new constitution has a provision that the members of the Council of Ministers should be limited to 25, both the government formed after the promulgation of the new constitution last year have violated this. Former Prime Minister K.P. Oli had formed a 41-member cabinet, the third largest in Nepal. Dr Baburam Bhattarai had formed the biggest cabinet of 49 members in 2011 and Sher Bahadur Deuba the second biggest (of 48 mmebers) in 1997.  Incumbent Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is also expanding the size of the cabinet which has already 31 members. Now Dahal is preparing to add seven state ministers from the Nepali Congress. Indeed, it is a shame that Nepal that is 22 smaller than India has a bigger parliament than India and the Prime Minister is trying to equal the size of cabinet with India! Obviously, most leaders want to become ministers to earn money but not to serve the people. This is why even a leader who has only one seat in the 601-member parliament tries his best to become a minister. The Prime Minister who fears that his government may be pulled down soon continues to add new minister until he remains in power. For the power hungry leaders constitutional provisions matter least.
