From party chair K. P. Oli to senior leaders like Madhav Kumar Nepal and Bam Dev Gautam, most UML leaders and cadres have strongly criticised the visit, especially after New Delhi issued a 25-point joint statement on Friday. Party chairman and former Prime Minister K. P. Oli said that the 25-point joint statement was unacceptable to his party. Oli had been against Dahal’s India visit. He had asked the relevance of Dahal’s India visit within a month the latter assumed high office. “The government and the ruling parties need to justify the PM’s India visit and his decision to send special envoys to China and India,” Oil was quoted by The Rising Nepal, the official English daily. Oli was unhappy and when the issue relating amendment to Nepal constitution was discussed during Prime Minister Dahal’s India visit and inserted in the joint statement. Referring to this he said constitution could not be amended for other’s agenda. Oli also accused Prime Minister Dahal of weakening the country’s international affairs. Addressing a function orgainsed to mark the Constitution Day on Monday, Oli said, “It is wrong to say that the new constitution promulgated through the support of 92 per cent people’s representatives was unacceptable. The new constitution will not be amended at the interest of neighbours. It will be amended as per the need of the Nepalese people.” The Youth Association of Nepal, the powerful youth wing of CPN-UML, accused Prime Minister Dahal of inking agreement against national interest. The opposition to Prime Minister Dahal’s Delhi trip and the joint statement issued in New Delhi from the UML was so strong that PM Dahal had to cancel his US trip. The government had to clarify on the joint statement by issuing a statement on Monday. The CPN-UML marked the Constitution Day by organising a separate programme at Basantapur. Earlier on Sunday Oli said in Pokhara that his party would not accept the 25-point communiqué that undermined the independence of Nepal. “Nepal has agreed with the Indian view that imperfections of the Constitution should be redressed through an amendment,” he said referring to the joint statement. It seems Dahal’s Delhi visit has made the issue of constitution more complicated as it has further widened the gap between the CPN-UML and the Maoist-Centre.
