By Our Reporter Ganga Devi Adhikari of Fujel, Gorkha, has been staging fast-onto death demanding legal actions against the murderers of her youngest son  Krishna Prasad Adhikari.  Her husband Nanda Prasad Adhikari died two years ago while staging hunger strike putting forth the same demand. The poor widow is now fighting for her life and justice to her son. But surprisingly, her fast onto-death has not been noticed by the human rights activists neither are the mainstream media giving space to her struggle for justice. Only a small group of human rightists activists associated with ‘Save Ganga Maya’ campaign staged a sit-in demanding justice to her once in front of the Prime Minister’s Official residence a week ago. But at other times, she was totally ignored. The double standards of the human rights activists and media clearly show that activities of only powerful persons make news headlines and draw the attention of the human rights activists in Nepal. For mainstream media, Adhikari’s fast-onto death has not been an act worth reporting. The media that covers each move of Dr Govinda KC when he prepares to stage a strike has been keeping mum over similar act of Ganga Maya Adhikari. She has been seeking justice over the unlawful killing of her son Krishna.  He was killed by the Maoists in Chitwan when he was going to his mother’s place there. After the brutal killings of their son, both Ganga Maya and her husband had been demanding that those who killed their son should be booked. They staged fast onto death and Nanda Prasad died in course of staging his strike. Still the government did nothing to meet their demands. Although once the police nabbed and initiated legal process against a few involved in killing Krishna, the case was withdrawn under the Maoist pressure. Now when Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who led the armed violence killing 17,000 people in 10 years from 1996 to 2006, is leading the government, Ganga Maya has launched a fresh round of hunger strike risking her own weak body. But neither media nor the human rights activists have though it necessary to back her demand. Is Ganga Maya’s demand unlawful? Was her son not killed by the Maoists? Is not killing illegal? We get answers of all these questions in positive, still Ganga Maya has failed to win sympathy of media, civil society and the human rights activists, which is very intriguing.
