BP_smriti_bhawan_Nepali_congressBy Our Reporter Nepali Congress has demanded that the number of local units should be increased to 1000 from 565 proposed by the Local Body Restructuring Commission. The party held a meeting of the district party chiefs to discuss the issue in Kathmandu this week. During the concluding session of the two-day meeting of the district presidents, most of the NC stalwarts ranging from the top leaders to the districts presidents objected to the proposed number local bodies into 565, citing that it was not practical and relevant. Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba in his conclusion remarks indicated that 565 local units, proposed by the Local Body Restructuring Commission, should be modified. Addressing the concluding session of two-day NC district presidents meeting in the capital, Deuba said that since the Commission’s terms of reference was set by the government, it could also be altered. All the participants of the meeting underlined need for doubling the proposed number of local bodies. They argued that proposed number could curtail the facilities and services that the people had been enjoying under the existing set-up. A total of 66 district presidents and central working committee members were attended. Deuba also underlined need for holding the local election at any cost as per constitutional provision. He also suggested that the elections should be held under the old structure. The constitution has provisioned holding the local body elections within mid-April 2017.
