A meeting held at the Lazimpat residence of Prime Minister and Centre’s chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal decided to stall the national unity convention citing the need for the party to focus more on the government than on the organisational issues. The Centre was formed under Dahal by amalgamating nine different break-away parties of the CPN-Maoist with the mother party a few months ago. The factions of Ram Bahadur Thapa, Mani Thapa, Matrika Yadav and others were unified after Dr Baburam Bhattarai’s exit from the CPN-Maoist. The leaders had agreed to hold the unity convention in January next year. The party had also constituted a convention organising committee of about 2500 members. The Maoist leaders chose to hold the meeting on the fate of the centre’s convention at Lazimpat as many leaders hesitated to visit Prime Minister Dahal’s official residence in Baluwatar. However, the meeting decided to organise provincial meetings and restructure the departments of the party. The national unity convention is essential to approve the unification and receive the status of a party. However, appointment of Dahal to the top executive post has caused a delay to make the Centre a political party formally and endorse the unity. In the latest political development, it looks likely that the party will again suffer a break as Maoist Centre’s leaders like Prabhu Sah have strongly opposed the expansion of the cabinet by Prime Minister Dahal. If the unity convention is postponed again, many of the leaders are likely to desert the newly formed Maoist Centre.
