Bijaya Lal Shrestha has been appointed new chief editor of The Rising Nepal, the oldest English newspaper of Nepal being published from the Gorkhapatra Corporation.
Shrestha is one of the few professional journalists to lead the official English daily. Shrestha who obtained higher study in Russia and the USA was trained in journalism from UK.
He was serving as Managing Editor of the daily prior to his appointment as chief editor.
All journalists working with the TRN expressed their happiness over Shrestha’s appointment. Even former chief editors expressed their happiness over Shrestha’s natural succession to the editorship.
Outgoing Chief-Editor Yuba Nath Lamsal who wanted Shrestha to lead the daily after his retirement backed Shrestha strongly.
However, a few non-journalist staff of the Gorkhapatra Corporation had lobbied against Shrestha’s appointment only because he did not belong to their party and he did not give them any donation.
“The employees close to the CPN-Maoist Centre had tried their best to prevent Shrestha from becoming the new editor and had sought help from the Maoist leaders to appoint Arun Ranjit as chief editor of the daily. However, all senior journalists working in the daily strongly stood against Ranjit,” a journalist working with the daily told this reporter under the condition of anonymity.
Shrestha succeeded Yuba Nath Lamsal who retired on age bar on Monday.
