Incessant rains for the past one week have wrecked havoc across the country killing at least 12 people in many parts of the country.
Many towns from Birtamode in Jhapa to Birgunj in Parsa were submerged by the floodwaters while landslides caused damages to the mountainous districts.
By the time this news report was prepared; five deaths were reported from Gulmi, three each from Jhapa and Makawanpur and one each from Kathmandu and Sindhuli districts. A landslide in Gulmi killed five of the same family on Monday while three persons were killed in another landlside in Makawanpur. Floods in Jhapa killed three. In Sindhuli, a woman who was undergoing treatment after being buried in a landslide succumbed to injuries and in Aalapot of Kathmandu a woman died after being buried by the wall of her house. Three persons of a single family died after a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall buried their house at Sola Bhanjyang in Bhimphedi-5 of Makwanpur district in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Four districts of eastern Nepal, namely Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Saptari were hit worst by the floods. Almost all towns and villages in Jhapa were inundated by the floods while in Morang many human settlements were submerged by floodwaters. The water of Aduwa river inundated Birtamode and the Mechi entered the human settlement in Bhadrapur. Udayapur, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa and Kaski were also hit by floods. Parts of Birgunj and Simrara remained under floodwaters on Monday while the swollen Kankai in Jhapa and Koshi in Sunsari and Saptari districts have put many villages under high risk. Levels of water have increased in almost all rivers.
Many roads including the east-west highway, the Dharan-Dhankuta highway, the B. P. highway were damaged by the landslides at different points. About 200 households were inundated by Saptakoshi in Udaypur.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology and Weather Forecast has issued warnings to the people to remain alerts as there were chances of heavy rains in western part of Nepal.
