Nepal Airlines that was established as Royal Nepal Airlines in 1958 marked its 58th anniversary last week.
However, in 58 years of its establishment the national flag career failed to make any meaningful progress. It had no adequate aircraft to cater international services. The NA’s situation that worsened with the advent of democracy in 1990 due to corruption has not improved yet. While the Thais Airways that was established on the same year the NA was established has emerged as one of the major air services of the world having a big fleet of aircraft, NA has been operating only one or two Boeings in its international services. The NA planes that used to fly to Europe and Japan until 1980s have confined to a few destinations of the east Asian nations and New Delhi.
Even in the domestic front, the service of NA has been limited only in the western hills. Moreover, the NA flights in the major cities have nicknamed as ‘cancelled airs’ as it most often cancels flights of its aircraft for no apparent reason. As a result, the people have to depend on the private airlines to travel within the country and foreign airlines to fly abroad.
The Tribhuvan International Airport is now getting congested due to increased number of flights of international airlines. One could hardly notice a plane of NA in the crowd of the aircraft of foreign airlines. Relocating the international airport has also been a big challenge to the nation’s aviation service. But the government seems to be less serious in increasing the fleet of NA and speed up the task of building new airport in Bijgadh of Bara district.
