PUSHPARAJ-PRADHANBy PR Pradhan The United Kingdom has decided to exit from the European Union, a body of 28-member European countries. The referendum on last Thursday had tried to define the democracy in other ways. The new definition can be that the national security and national identity come first than the democratic values. Adam Smith pleaded for free economy based on “demand and supply”. However, today’s generation are not satisfied from such ideology. After terrorist attacks in France, the French people have felt that national security is more important that the individual rights. In the US, Republican candidate to the post of the President, Donald Trump, with the slogan of “America first”, has drawn attention of the American voters. He is of the view of temporarily stopping migration of the Muslim community to America and also constructing a wall to stop migration of the people from Mexico. Trump has strongly challenged democratic candidate having traditional values, Hillary Clinton. Trump has given first priority to the national security and the voters have liked his political agendas. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his election campaign, had given the slogan, “Made in India” with the aim of promoting economic nationalism. As the world order is being gradually shifting towards nationalistic approach, how have our political leaders and policy makers viewed and what strategy are they going to initiate in the Nepali context, we have no idea as the political leaders are fighting against each other on their vested interests or party interests. The leaders are unable to stand above their personal or party interests. The Nepali political leaders give big talks about democracy (loktantra) but our ‘loktantra’ is based on syndicate system. Some leaders gather in one room and take important decisions claiming that they were the decisions made by the “supreme” people. They are unable to say “Nepal first” or “made in Nepal”. They are running behind the foreign interests as they introduced the constitution to please their foreign bosses but not to please the Nepali population. In the UK, referendum was organized to decide on whether the UK remains in the EU or to exits from EU. When the result of referendum was against Prime Minister David Cameron’s belief, Cameron without any hesitation, decided to quit the post saying that in the changed context, he should not remain in the leadership. Talking about Nepal, the implementation part of the constitution is very much challenging as majority of the population is against secular, republic federalism. This agenda was imposed none other than the EU countries as an experiment in Nepal like developing country. Coincidently, today, the common economic and political platform of the European countries, EU is facing crisis after the result of the referendum of the United Kingdom. Why our leaders are hesitant to decide on key issues in the constitution, specially, secular, federal republic, by holding a referendum? Why are they hesitant and why are they forcefully trying to impose these agendas in the constitution? Nepal cannot remain aloof from the shifting trend of the world order. Therefore, the Nepali leaders as well as the concerned security organs have to analyze pros and cons of the decision of the people from the Great Britain. As the Scottish leaders are of the view of a fresh referendum on Scotland becoming an independent country and the people from Northern Ireland also demanding for an independent status, people who have migrated from India in Tarai district may intensify their campaign for Madhesh as an independent nation by serving their motherland India. In Tarai districts, there are two kinds of people – one, sons/daughters of the soil, the other, migrated people from India having dual citizenship. Sons and daughters of the soil are being exploited by India and also by those migrated Indians. The fertile lands of our real Tarai people are either being encroached by the Indians or inundated by India by constructing dams in the Indian side. Politically, the migrated Indians have exploited them. Therefore, the government and the concerned authorities in our national security organs have to help the real Tarai people and expose ill intentions of those migrated Indians. The other thing is that the present provision of distributing citizenship certificate on the basis of marriage should be scrapped. The government should start investigation on those Indian nationals holding Nepali citizenship certificates by producing false documents. Our open borders with India have to be closed and the government should discourage cross-country mirage. If we want to secure our own identity and national security, the above mentioned provisions have to be implemented without any delay.
