These days, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is alleged by the Indians for following the Mahendra Path. According to those leaders who have met with the Indian leaders and officials from the South Block, the Indians are alleging Oli trying to be a follower of Mahendra Path by giving anti-Indian patriotic slogans. How much King Mahendra had hurt the Indians having hegemonic attitude, it makes clear from such remarks by the Indians. In fact, what is the Mahendra Path, may be the new generation is not much aware about this. Whether we call it the Prithivi Path or Mahendra Path, the basic idea was to make Nepal a self-reliant, independent, sovereign and indivisible country. Recently, Oli visited China and signed a transit and other important agreements with China. All the Nepalis have appreciated this deal as this has a long term impact on Nepal’s economic development. However, this agreement has seriously hurt the Indians. The Indian media, which has rarely given coverage on Nepal affairs, has focused on Oli’s China visit in a surprising manner. From this also, one can understand how much India is worried from the deal with China. During King Mahendra’s era, China constructed the Kodari Highway linking the Chinese border with Kathmandu. China also constructed the Prithivi Highway linking Pokhara with Kathmandu. China constructed different industries in the process of transforming Nepal into an industrial country. The Chinese supports were for long term development of Nepal substituting Indian imports. Unfortunately, after introduction of the multiparty democracy, the India-puppet governments disposed all the industries established by China by intensifying Nepal’s economic dependency on India. During the blockade imposed by India, the impact of dependency with India was experienced by all the Nepalis. Oli, thus, was compelled to follow the Mahendra Path, which is disliked by the Indians. One section of the Nepali people, who are known to be the puppets of India, always tried to project King Mahendra as a feudal and anti-democratic monarch. Nevertheless, how, in his very short tenure, he had given proper direction to the country, now the people have started to realize and evaluate. Not only the contribution of King Mahendra, but also the contributions of King Birendra and King Gyanendra are being recalled by the patriotic people. On 10 Baisakh (22 April this year), the tenth “loktnatra day” was observed here. The mainstream Nepali media covered reports on the ‘loktnatra day”. The media had questioned what the country got from the introduction of “loktantra”! The political leaders have seen nothing new as “achievement” from “loktantra”. The country has been seriously ruined on all fronts. The country has been declared a republic, but the former King is becoming more and more popular among the people. The country has been declared federal state, but adoption of federalism has become almost impossible. There is strong pressure on the political leaders to restore the Hindu Kingdom as the People’s Movement 2 had no agenda of a federal secular republic. This agenda was introduced from the backdoor, going against the agreement reached between the then King Gyanendra and the political parties in agitation. The political leaders, specially, Girija Prasad Koirala, betrayed King Gyanendra to fulfill his personal desire of becoming the President of the nation. Former Chief of Army Staff retired Gen Pyarjung Thapa has recalled the situation at that time and also disclosed the agreement between the political parties and the then King Gyanendra in a piece appeared in the Setopati Online. Gen Thapa has disclosed that neither from King Birendra nor from King Gyanendra, he received any order to launch attacks on the Maoists during the “people’s war”. The Kings had always said that after all the Maoists were also Nepali people who have taken the wrong path of armed violence. Therefore, the Royal Nepal Army had received the order just to disarm them and bring the Maoists to the peace process. He has also disclosed the fact that the Kings were against killing of the Nepali people and the Army had performed defensive role only. Thapa has recalled that due to which only 20 persons were killed in 19-day-long massive agitation. Even when human sea was witnessed in Kathmandu, King Gyanendra didn’t give the permission to open fire to the Army on the people in agitation. The then King had said to him that he had no interests to stick on the throne secured by the bloodbath of the Nepali people. The King, thus wished to peacefully handover the executive power to the political parties. Thapa recalled that there was an agreement for the continuation of constitutional monarchy and Girija Prasad Koirala, who became the PM, had taken oath from the King and the King, by fulfilling the demand of Girija Prasad Koirala, had restored the dissolved parliament. After the handover of the power to the political parties, what the country and the people achieved, that has been seen by all. Dishonest political leaders enjoyed power, earned money through rampant corruption, on the other hand, the country’s economy went on the verge of collapse and the youths were compelled to go abroad for low-quality and risky jobs. The past ten years without monarchy has empowered anarchism and mobocracy has flourished in the name of “loktantra”. Although Gen Thapa has given details about the inside scenario of the people’s movement 2, why he was unable to take stance for continuation of the institution of monarchy, he has not explained. Thapa rushed to take oath from the King restored parliament. His second-man Gen Rookmangud Katwal also rushed to take oath from the parliament. If the two generals had taken stance to safeguard the institution of monarchy, the situation could be different. To recall, in 1990 also, efforts were on to end the institution of monarchy. When the Royal Nepal Army was informed about such a conspiracy, the then CoAS Gen Sachhit Shumsher Rana had led a delegation of all the generals to Baluatar and gave a strong message to the then PM Krishna Prasad Bhattarai that it was necessary for continuation of the institution of monarchy. In the same manner, Gen Thapa and Katwal could take an initiative for continuation of the institution of monarchy for the betterment of the country. Instead of safeguarding the institution, both the officials rushed to the political leaders to win confidence of them and also to prolong their tenure as the Army chiefs. In this regard, the two generals betrayed King Gyanendra and also the entire Nepali people as after the removal of the institution of monarchy the country has been facing worst days due to lack of visionary leadership and moral character among the political leaders. Be that as it may, now, it has been proven that the institution of monarchy had always contributed for the betterment of Nepal and the Nepali people. Other organs, after the removal of the institution of monarchy, could not play such a role. KP Oli was compelled to look towards China as India tried to stop him from becoming the PM and also tried to make unsuccessful his tenure. In fact, India had thought that the politics will totally come under the grip of India after removal of the institution of monarchy, which is an outdated thinking. Today is the era of IT and social media. Any conspiracy planted by India will immediately be disclosed and circulated among all. The traditional mentality of the Indian hegemony both from the leaders and bureaucrats cannot be kept secret for a long time. Today, the entire Nepalis have strong sentiment against India. If India will not correct the course, this sentiment will be further intensified among the Nepali people. India cannot stop the Nepali people from walking on the Mahendra Path anymore.
